Born
in England on the 14th February 1967, the daughter of much respected
transport tycoon Lord Henshingly Croft, Lara was set to lead her
life as a high society figure. From the age of 11, Lara was educated
at the Sor Bon in Paris, where she discovered rock climbing, before
returning to England to finish her schooling. In her final year,
Lara took a ski trip that would change her life forever.
The class of 18, led by teacher Miss Millet, traveled to Tibet for
what was a week of great skiing. On the plane flight home, however,
while flying through think fog, the plane hit a flock of birds.
One of the birds smashed through the windscreen of the prop driven
aircraft, causing the pilot to momentarily lose visuals. The plane
veed of course, and one of its wings clipped a cliff.
The plane went down. Lara woke 45 minutes after the crash. All of
the other passengers were dead. Fearing an avalanche, Lara grabbed
what she could and fled the wreckage, just minutes before the plane
was covered by masses of snow. A week later, Lara stumbled into
the small village of Tokakeriby, near Biratnagar, Nepal, almost
dead.
Doctor
Laing, an American missionary doctor who was working in the village
at the time, nurtured her back to health. Upon her return to England,
Lara began to find that upper-class British society was a bit to
claustrophobic for her, and began missing the adventure of being
along in harsh environments. Lara began taking voyages of discovery
and exploration around the world to fill her desires.
Despite
the drastic life change, Lara still retained the essence of her
upbringing - most notably with her polite, upper-class accent. Lara's
parents though, having sported hopes of her marrying the Earl of
Farringdon, were less than convinced about this chosen lifestyle.
In 1988 she was disowned by her family, and turned to writing as
a mean to fund her trips, with all of her books becoming instant
best sellers. Lara just managed to live off the profits of her books,
until being contacted by one of the Croft family lawyers in 1993.
She
was informed of a secret treasure hidden by one of her long lost
relatives. After an extensive search,
the treasure was found, setting up Lara for the rest of her life.
Along with the treasure, Lara also received a large plot of land
in the British Virgin Islands, on the island of St Bridget, as well
as the title of the Duchess of Saint Bridget.
Lara
is currently living alone in her Mansion in Surrey, which she inherited
many years ago. At one time she saw little use in it but now realizes
that, if nothing else, it is at least handy for storing all the
artifacts she has acquired on her travels. She is also occasionally
seen at her summer home on the island of St. Bridget, in the British
Virgin Islands.
